New Solar Project in Delaware

The Window Man recently designed and installed a sustainable thermal system for Schüco in Seaford, Delaware. This project is a high-performance flat roof system for delivering solar hot water to the Seaford High School. The system consists of 14 Schüco Premium LA collectors, a Schüco PS2.1 LF-50 heat transfer station and various Schüco balanced-of-system components. The unique piping and special thermal features built into the Premium LA collectors allow for installation of up to 16 collectors in series without the need for lengthy assembly of external compensators. System assembly was quick and easy thanks to Schüco’s ezFlatroof mounting system.

The annual energy savings are considerable – more than 950 therms of natural gas per year, representing a reduction in CO2 emissions of 12,500 lbs a year. This double benefit presents a decisive argument: lowering energy costs while making a clear contribution to protecting the climate.

For more information or to ask about installing a similar system in your commercial or residential building, contact The Window Man today!

Window Condensation?

Window condensation can be a problem for many area homeowners. Here are The Window Man's six steps to controlling condensation and excess humidity:

1. Replace old worn out windows with insulated glass. This will better insulate your windows from the outside air. This won't prevent excess humidity in the air—but it will make looking out your windows easier.

2. Be sure that louvers in the attic or basement crawl spaces are open and that they are large enough.

3. Run your kitchen or other ventilating fans longer and more often than you have in the past.

4. Shut off your furnace humidifier and any other humidifying devices in your home.

5. Open your fireplace damper to allow moisture to escape easier.

6. A dehumidifier can help reduce interior condensation. If you don't have a dehumidifier, air out your house for a few minutes each day.

If these common remedies don't work, the condensation problem should be looked at by a qualified heating contractor. He may suggest an outside air intake for your furnace or installation of venting fans. These inexpensive options will be less costly than a major painting job or plaster work caused by excess water vapor.

For more information about how to control excess humidity and therefore window condensation stop by one of The Window Man's three Northern Virginia showrooms today!

Capitol Hill Homeowner Happy With New Windows

A DC area homeowner recently wrote in to let us know how happy she was with her new windows from The Window Man.

***

Just a quick note to let you know that my husband, 3 kids and I are really enjoying our new windows. We already feel the difference of fewer drafts in the house and really appreciate the ease of opening and closing the windows.

I have to say that from the very start, using your company was a true pleasure. You have the most professional sales manner---never pushing a hard sale on the customer---and the communication with the measuring guy along with delivery dates was so clear. Finally, the guys who installed the windows (Sept 12th) could not have been nicer!! When we have our front screens and storm windows replaced, I would request them again. They went right to work, were very respectful of our property and so courteous. We will recommend your company to all our friends.

Thank you again for everything and when our budget permits, we will call you back for the front windows.

Thanks again!!

What is a fiberglass composite product?

As you browse through The Window Man's many window products you may find yourself wondering what fiberglass composite is...

Pultrusion is the process used to produce continuous lengths of strong, fiberglass composite products having a constant cross section. Products manufactured using this technology include window framing materials, rods, structural shapes, beams, channels, pipe, and tubing.

The manufacturing process works like this: continuous strands of fiberglass rovings and fiberglass mats are impregnated with resin, then drawn through a steel die which sets the shape of the stock. A portion of the die is heated to initiate the cure. The end product is a Thermoset Fiberglass Composite. Very high strengths are possible due to high glass concentration and the orientation of fiberglass rovings and mats parallel and perpendicular to the length of the material being drawn through the die.

(What does thermoset mean: heat is generally used to cause a chemical reaction which sets the shape of the part permanently. Once the materials are cured they cannot be reformed: the process is irreversible.)

What are U and R Values & How Do They Relate To Window Insulation?

One way that insulation is created is with dead-air space between panes of glass. That's why a double-paned window gives more insulation than a single-paned one. Other factors contribute to the insulation qualities of a window, such as the gasket, the material type, and the gas used in a gas-filled window. The U/R value tells how the product insulates. It is a formula derived from the efficiency of the product, and that formula takes into account many of the factors just mentioned. A good R measurement is a high one, while a good U measurement is low since U is the reciprocal of the R. Homeowners are more interested in the R value, while builders are interested in the U value.

What Is Heat Mirror?

In an effort to educate consumers, The Window Man is happy to provide information about new and replacement windows.

The choice of the right glazing is one of the most important and far-reaching decisions that an architect or building owner will make. This decision impacts the overall design, human comfort, energy efficiency, mechanical HVAC design and loads, day lighting, condensation control, ultraviolet fading and sound control. In the design of any building (whether it be residential, commercial or industrial) one must look at and take into consideration the six principal glazing design challenges.

These are:

* Winter Comfort and Heating Load
* Summer Comfort Cooling Load
* Natural Day lighting
* Appearance and Reflectivity
* Ultraviolet Fading Control
* Condensation Control

The Heat Mirror™ family of wavelength-selective products offer the solution to all glazing design challenges such as climate, elevation and application. These solutions provide unparalleled flexibility to "tune" a building to meet these needs. As more and more architects, builders and homeowners adopt Southwall's technology buildings will move from part of the environmental problem to part of its solution.

Window Tinting

You may be baffled why some Metro DC area homeowners are choosing tinted new or replacement windows for their homes. The Window Man advises its clients that tinted windows are used for more than merely keeping the sun out: the tinting, which comes in gray or bronze, reduces the light that infiltrates the home and also reduces heat gain--all particularly valuable in the DC area's hot sticky summers!

Stop by one of our three Northern Virginia showrooms today to find out if tinted windows make sense for your home.

Six Practical Steps to Controlling Condensation and Excess Humidity

Have problems with condensation along your windows? Here are some easy steps The Window Man for controlling humidity--and therefore condensation:

1. Replace old worn out windows with insulated glass. This will better insulate your windows from the outside air. This won't prevent excess humidity in the air, but it will make looking out your windows a lot easier!

2. Be sure that louvers in the attic or basement crawl spaces are open and that they are large enough.

3. Run your kitchen or other ventilating fans longer and more often than you usually do.

4. Shut off your furnace humidifier and any other humidifying devices in your home.

5. Open your fireplace damper so moisture can escape more easily.

6. Use a dehumidifier to reduce interior condensation.

Fire Rated Double and Single Hung Steel Windows

The Window Man is proud to offer Northern Virginia residents and commercial property owners fire rated double and single hung steel doors by Optimum. Stop by one of The Window Man's three showrooms today to preview Optimum's SC7650 and SC7650 series windows and to consult with one of our representatives.

Series SC7650

Optimum's steel double and single hung windows have been proven to withstand temperatures in excess of 1650 degrees (900 degrees C) in laboratory tests. Even after 45 minutes of fire exposure all individual muntins, mullions, jamb members and sash components remained in position. Each window features two fusible link components made of slow melting alloy. When exposed to temperatures of 165 degrees or more, the links melt and automatically seal the window shut, which prevents the spread of smoke and fire to adjacent buildings.

SC7650 Series Specifications

General: Steel vertical sliding window shall be Series SC7650 as manufactured by Optimum Steel Window Corporation. All windows shall carry either an MEA and or Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) label for fire resistance rating of 45 minutes, in accordance with the standards for Fire Tests of Window Assemblies, ANSI/ UL9 (NFPA 257, ASTM El63). Materials: All principal cold rolled formed members shall be ASTM A528 Low Carbon Steel. Frame members shall have a minimum thickness of 20 gauge.

Weatherstripping: Sliding sash panels shall have EPDM gaskets throughout entire perimeter (unless otherwise noted).

Finish: All units shall be reasonably free from scratches and blemishes and have the following:

The Greener Side Of Things

The Window Man has our environment and your best interest in mind when considering what products we provide to our consumers. With the all of the new information available to us regarding PVC and its effects on the environment and on our health we have taken a closer look at what we are selling and how we are handling the disposal of the materials used and
removed in replacing your windows and doors.

As we are all aware products made of PVC, including “Vinyl Windows,” pose great risks to our
health and our environment. However, a “non-plastic nation” is virtually impossible. But we can
limit the use of this material. The Window Man offers only products that are made to last so that
they do not have to be replaced again. The truth of the matter is that vinyl windows are the most
economical way of conserving the use of fossil fuels and saving energy. With a vinyl window that is engineered to have the least amount of air infiltration and a “life of home” life cycle can create
a powerful reason for using vinyl windows in your home. We also educate consumers on ways to
save their existing wood windows and make them more efficient without replacing them, therefore reducing scrap materials produced during manufacturing and disposal of your existing windows--all while making your home more energy efficient and comfortable at the same time. We do understand that this option is not always the best option for the homeowner or that the existing window is not salvageable. In these cases, we offer windows made from a variety of materials such as fiberglass, wood, aluminum, steel and the best engineered vinyl windows available in the market today. This allows us to offer a solution that best fits your needs while doing our part to protect our environment and you.

As part of this fight we have added our sister company “The Solar Energy Co.” to our arsenal of
energy-saving products. The Solar Energy Co. offers solar energy systems for both
thermal (hot water) and photovoltaic (electric) ways to use our greatest source of energy: the SUN!

Our goal is to do our part to protect our planet, our quality of life, and the quality of life of our
future-our children.

Please join us in this fight, ask us how to save your old windows and make your more home energy efficient at the same time.

DeVac 600 Series Dual Frame Thermo-Barrier

Here at The Window Man we carry many models of new and replacement windows, including DEVAC's high performance series.

The DEVAC 600 Series high performance dual frame Thermo-Barrier aluminum windows have a wide airspace between interior and exterior glass panes to conserve energy and reduce outside noise penetration. The unique, non-structural DEVAC Thermo-Barrier provides the key to effective performance by meeting essential design criteria:

  • Insulates interior frame and sash from costly thermal transfer and improves condensation resistance.
  • Effectively seals against air and water leakage through barrier into wall structures.
  • Allows freedom of expansion and contraction while keeping structural integrity between interlocking parts.
  • Interlocks aluminum frame members so that forces generated by thermal movement and structural load will utilize the barrier material for it's greater compressive strength. A design principle proven by 30 years of service with no failure.
  • Custom sized to 1/32 of an inch. Available as double-hung, horizontal slider, removable panel and fixed panel. Historical designs and special shapes are offered.

For New Construction or Renovation

Exclusive dual-pane/dual-barrier design* provides the highest STC (Sound Transmission Class) available in fully operating windows. STC's from 37 to 56 are obtainable in standard DeVAC window products glazed with common monolithic glass.

Devac's Thermo-Barrier™ frame and wide, trapped air space glazing system are key elements to the 600 Series' outstanding acoustic performance...performance not obtainable with laminated or sealed insulating glass.

Sound transmission loss tests consistenly show the DeVAC Acoustic Window system provides better STC ratings than the same thicknesses in other systems. There is no significant acoustic benefit from laminated glass in DeVAC Acoustic Windows, which means an economical installation that is not in conflict with life safety requirements. (Research tests also show a loss of acoustic performance when laminated glass is subjected to cool weather.)

With DeVAC, windows are not an acoustic "weak link" in exterior walls. In fact, selecting from many DeVAC product and glazing combinations to acoustically match the values of window and wall is the best way to assure that needed performance is provided without uneconomical over-specifying. Devac acoustic windows offer attractive, cost-effective sound control for new developments saturated by aircraft or freeway noise. The ease of maintenance, cleaning and operation, coupled with adaptable designs and accessories, also make DeVAC Acoustical Windows a top choice for retrofit at sites experiencing increasing disruption from outside noises intruding on the interior environment.

Mon-Ray Custom Fit Classic Series Storm Doors

You know about Mon-Ray windows, but are you familiar with Mon-Ray storm doors? The Window Man carries all of Mon-Ray's models--and our consultants would be delighted to help you choose which one is best suited for your home.

Mon-Ray Classic Series storm doors are the result of over forty years of research, design and production. Pound for pound, no other storm door can compare to its overall strength, energy-efficiency and attractive, trim-line appeareance.

The exceptional strong tubular frame and Z-bar are made of tough T6 aluminum. This additional heat tempering gives the aluminum a special retention memory. When twisted it will return to its original, straight-line shape. Because of the superior strenght of T6 tempering, the aluminum extrusions in the Classic door are not as thick and bulky as those in other doors. The result is a more attractive, trim-line appearance with more area for viewing and ventilating.

Each of the corners are neatly joined together with a solid aluminum gusset that is over 1/4" thick. The corner gussets are securely anchored to the frame with four stainless steel screws to prevent twisting and seperating. Sturdy, tubular, aluminum frame section will not easily bend, dent or sag.

Features:

  • Exceptionally Strong Z-Bar...with durable Fin-Seal weatherstripping around full perimeter provides an energy tight seal.
  • Strong T6 Tempered Tubular Frame...will not easily bend, sag or swell like inexpensive metal, vinyl or wood doors.
  • Unique Mon-Ray Self-Storing Window Unit...engineered to be energy efficient, yet easy to operate. Attractive, trim-line design provides for maximum viewing and ventilating.
  • Spring-Loaded, Stainless Steel Pin-Locks...easy to grip and operate. Ratchet-style jamb liner provides ventilation settings every 2 inches.
  • Solid, Insulating Masonite Panel...effectively reinforces permanently bonded aluminum kickplate from unsightly dents.
  • Adhustable Sill Expander...is double weatherstripped to assure snug fit when door is closed.

About Mon-Ray Storm Doors
Mon-Ray backs its Classic Series storm door with a written, non-prorated Ten Year Warranty. While other storm door manufacturers only provide warranty coverage to the original owner, Mon-Ray warranty is fully transferable to whoever owns the residence on which the door was originally installed.

The importance of strength and durability in providing comfort and security, as well as, maintaining the original appearance is found in the Classic Door. If energy-efficiency, low-maintenance and a long-lasting, attractive appearance are important to you, then your search for the right storm door is over.

Watch as the heavy-duty closer gently pulls the Classic Door closed. while the closer works to hinder quick and damaging slamming, the sturdy check chain helps prevent dangerous full-open swinging.

WHAT IS HEAT MIRROR?

As The Window Man well knows--the choice of the right glazing is one of the most important and far-reaching decisions that an architect or building owner will make. This decision impacts the overall design, human comfort, energy efficiency, mechanical HVAC design and loads, daylighting, condensation control, ultraviolet fading and sound control. In the design of any building (whether it be residential, commercial or industrial) one must look at and take into consideration the six principal glazing design challenges.

These are:

  • Winter Comfort and Heating Load
  • Summer Comfort Cooling Load
  • Natural Daylighting
  • Appearance and Reflectivity
  • Ultraviolet Fading Control
  • Condensation Control

The Heat Mirror™ family of wavelength-selective products offer the solution to all glazing design challenges such as climate, elevation and application. These solutions provide unparalleled flexibility to "tune" a building to meet these needs. As more and more architects, builders and homeowners adopt Southwall's technology buildings will move from part of the environmental problem to part of its solution.

What does the term "failed" mean and how can you tell when a window has "failed"?

In your search for new or replacement windows you've probably come across a lot of terms like the phrase "window failure" and wondered what it means.

Well, a window has failed if there's moisture in between the panes of glass.

There are two types of window failures:

  1. a seal failure: moisture (condensation) leaks into the space between the panes.
  2. a window failure: the window is no longer keeping out the elements.

Soft-Lite's Top 5 Questions To Ask About Window Design

Soft-Lite, a leading manufacturer of replacement windows, provides a check-list of important questions to ask while choosing a window. The Window Man, as an exclusive Soft-Lite dealer of a window made exclusively for The Window Man--the The Window Man DH-11--we're happy to talk about each of Soft-Lite's top 5 questions with you.

They are:

Top Five Questions to ask about the design features of the window:

1. Tell me what makes your sill design better than the others.
a. All of our double-hung models, for example, feature an engineered sloped sill that offers
more barriers and diversions to air and water infiltration than conventional, lower-performance sills. There is a mechanical structural interlock that supplements the interlock at the meeting rail to hold the lower sash tightly in place, even during high-stress wind loads in excess of 190 miles per hour. A sill rail runs the length of the sill that is straddled by a soft rubber gasket under compression when the window is locked to block air and water from entering. Our sill dam is mortised directly into the jamb to assure no butt-joint leaks common to older sills where sealant is the only barrier. Optional Comfort FoamTM can be used to insulate the inside chambers of the sill for the ultimate in energy efficiency.

2. Tell me about your weatherstripping and compression seals.
a. Our windows feature Triple-Fin weatherstrips that offer two or three times the barriers of
single or double-fin designs. Each fin is compounded with Microban®, a popular anti-microbial
treatment that fights the growth of mold and bacteria on the weatherstripping. Our closed-cell
neoprene compression seals work under the pressure of the locked window much like the
gaskets in refrigerators and freezers, to fight the transfer of energy in and out and to add yet
more barriers and diversions to the penetration of air and water into your home.

3. Does your window have mechanical interlocks and where are they?
a. All of our windows feature mechanical interlocks at the meeting rail between the lock rail and the keeper rail. There is another mechanical structural interlock built into our sill design on some models.

4. How tight are the manufacturing tolerances on your window?
a. With our new Sturtz automated assembly lines, installed in late 2006, our overall
manufacturing tolerances are the best in the business at ± 1/32”.
5. How many options do I have available to me to customize your window?
a. Internal grids, V-groove glass, tempered, laminated, triple pane, different spacer systems, art glass, internal laminates, external colors; consult your The Window Man representative.

Stop by one of our three showrooms today to ask about The Window Man DH11 as well as our other Soft-Lite products.

Why Do Some Double Paned Windows Have Injected Gas?

As you're shopping around for your new or replacement windows, you may run into some terms you don't understand or question some of the manufacturing choices. Why, for example, do some manufacturers injecting gas into the space between panes of glass in double paned windows?

The answer is: insulation. There are actually two types of gas are used to fill the space between panes of glass: argon and krypton. These two gases are denser than air, which means they contribute to better insulation. Krypton is even denser than argon, which is why windows that use it are slightly more expensive.

If you've got any more questions, or merely want to take a look at the window options available to you, stop by one of our three showrooms in Chantilly, Alexandria, and Fairfax today. One of The Window Man's consultants will be delighted to speak with you!

Fairfax Customers Happy With Their Bay Window

The Window Man prides itself on its commitment to customer satisfaction. We recently got a letter from a satisfied customer in Fairfax, VA.

"Thank you for the beautiful bay window," Robin and Mary Kathryn write. "We are very pleased with our window! It looks like it has been part of our house forever. Since we first walked into your showroom on Pickett Road in Fairfax, Virginia we have been pleased with the responsiveness and understanding of the entire team involved in this endeavor. Our sales rep was very helpful and accommodating. The installation team was very respectful of our property and took time to protect our floors as they demolished the old window and put in the new one. The clean up after the installation left our property as if nothing had been done and difficult to remember the old window. We highly recommend The Window Man to our friends and neighbors and thank you for your professionalism, attention to detail and concern for our home improvement needs."

Window Insulation: U & R Values

As you're looking for new or replacement windows for your DC, Virginia or Maryland home, you''ve probably run into some terms you're not familiar with, such as (U) and (R) values. U and R values relate to a window's insulation capabilities.

What is Low-E?

If you've spent any time shopping for windows, you've come across the term low-E. But what exactly is low-e. Low-E, or low emissivity, refers to how a window reflects certain length waves. A window with a good low-E lowers your energy bill because in the summer it reflects sunlight to help cool your home and in the winter it absorbs sunlight to help in heat your home.

Which Window Is Best For the DC Metro Area?

Not all window materials are perfect for every environment. In the arid hot climate of the Southwest, for example, aluminum windows are the material of choice, whereas here in the Mid-Atlantic, vinyl, fiberglass and wood windows are the most popular. Some of this has to do with the region's building codes, and sometimes with the material's property. Aluminum, for example, conducts heat and cold and so not a wise choice for someone who wants to keep their home cool in the summer's scorching heat and hot during winters blustery storms.

Of course, figuring out the specific materials to use also depends on your home's architecture and your family's lifsetyle. That's why your best bet for choosing the perfect window for your home is to visit one of our three showrooms to discuss your needs with one of The Window Man's sales consultants.

Energy Star Windows

Because The Window Man is a partner in the Department of Energy's Energy Star Program many of our windows and doors carry the Energy Star label. The Energy Star label ensures you’ll enjoy a sizeable savings in your heating and cooling costs—while helping save our precious planet.

Experts estimate that 40% of a home owner’s annual energy budget is dedicated to heating and cooling costs. Choosing the right window, door or skylight to seal in heat in winter and cool air in summer means less wasted energy and reduced costs.

Energy Star labeled windows, doors and skylights are twice as efficient as the average windows manufactured just ten years ago. Visit The Window Man’s Virginia showrooms today to talk about how Energy Star windows, doors and skylights can help your home become more efficient.

Optimum Windows

If you're looking for replacement windows for your Northern Virginia, DC or Maryland home, you may want to consider The Window Man's Optimum fire rated windows. In lab tests, Optimum's steel double and single hung windows can withstand temperatures over 1650 degrees F. Optimum is so strong that even after 45 minutes of exposure to fire all individual components remain in place. Plus, each of Optimum's windows have two fusible link components made of slow melting alloy. When the windows are exposed to 165 degrees or more, these links melt and seal the window, preventing the spread of smoke and fire to nearby buildings.

For safety and durability, the Optimum Series
SC7650 is a wise choice for any homeowner.

Contact The Window Man today for more information about Optimum
SC7650 and other replacement windows.
