Precision Doors Decorate Glass

Precision's decorative glass for entry doors--carried by The Window Man in all three Northern Virginia show rooms, offers the highest quality glass.

From day one, the manufacturer's goal has been to create world-class Decorative Glass. They have assenbled a global artisan community, all masters of their craft. And they're proud to bring you the spectacular-whether it's the textural beauty of fine art glass, intricate sand carving, precision-shaped brass caming, or the prisms of light from hand cut bevels. It's all been done with one goal in mind: to create the most memorable architectural glass in the world.
Each glass panel is handmade and reflects minor difference from piece to piece. This is characteristic of any handmade product and adds to its charm and beauty. The patterns can vary in size and particular shapes but pose no danger of spontaneous breakage or structural instability. Precision continually inspects for consistency. Any patterns that are severely out of character with the glass are not accepted. Their goal is to provide the finest quality glass panels.

What does the term "failed" mean and how can you tell when a window has "failed"?

In your search for new or replacement windows you've probably come across a lot of terms like the phrase "window failure" and wondered what it means.

Well, a window has failed if there's moisture in between the panes of glass.

There are two types of window failures:

  1. a seal failure: moisture (condensation) leaks into the space between the panes.
  2. a window failure: the window is no longer keeping out the elements.

WHAT IS HEAT MIRROR?

As you prepare to purchase new or replacement windows, you're probably wondering about a lot of the terms you've been seeing--glazing.

The choice of the right glazing is one of the most important and far-reaching decisions that an architect or building owner will make. This decision impacts the overall design, human comfort, energy efficiency, mechanical HVAC design and loads, daylighting, condensation control, ultraviolet fading and sound control. In the design of any building (whether it be residential, commercial or industrial) one must look at and take into consideration the six principal glazing design challenges.

These are:

  • Winter Comfort and Heating Load
  • Summer Comfort Cooling Load
  • Natural Daylighting
  • Appearance and Reflectivity
  • Ultraviolet Fading Control
  • Condensation Control

The Heat Mirror™ family of wavelength-selective products, offered at The Window Man, offer the solution to all glazing design challenges such as climate, elevation and application. These solutions provide unparalleled flexibility to "tune" a building to meet these needs. As more and more architects, builders and homeowners adopt Southwall's technology buildings will move from part of the environmental problem to part of its solution.

Thinking about replacement windows? Consider Optimum’s Self Closing Sliding Steel Window.

Series SC7600 Optimum's fire rated sliding steel window features a self-closing mechanism that automatically closes the window in the event of fire. This sliding steel window incorporates the same type of fusible link in Optimum's other fire rated products.

SC7600 Series Specifications

Steel horizontal sliding window shall be Series SC7600 as manufactured by Optimum Steel Window Corporation. All windows shall carry either an MEA or Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) fire resistance rating of 45 minutes in accordance with the fire standards for Fire Tests of Window Assemblies, ANSI/UL9 (NFPA 257, ASTM E163).

Materials: All principal cold rolled formed members shall be ASTM A528 low carbon steel. Frame members shall have a minimum thickness of 20 gauge.

Weatherstripping: Sliding sash panel shall have EPDM gaskets throughout entire perimeter (unless otherwise noted).

Finish: All units shall be reasonably free from scratches and blemishes having the following:

* Zinc coating (ASTM A525 Z200) on both surfaces, applied by a continuous hot dipped process (the Sendzimir system) followed by a "skin pass" (smoothing) procedure, which eliminates roughness.
* Primer consisting of a thermosetting epoxy-ureic paint, applied at a thickness of 5 microns on both surfaces.
* Baked polyester powder coating. (Baked at 180-200° C for 18 to 20 minutes) with an average thickness of 80 microns.

Glazing: Windows shall be factory glazed with obscure or clear 1/4" wire glass. Lites shall have a minimum of 24-gauge wire and a maximum mesh size of one square inch, as per Underwriters Laboratories requirements. Individual lites of glass shall not exceed a day lite dimension of 895 square inches each. Glass shall comply with ANSI Z97.1 and ASTM C1036.

Construction: Frame to be formed of 20 gauge steel sections, with corners which are mechanically assembled and reinforced. Sash members shall be 20 gauge formed sections, which are coped and assembled. Corner joints shall be fully sealed to prevent leakage. Vent sash shall roll on an 18 gauge track with 1/4" diameter steel ball bearing rollers. Horizontal muntins, when required, shall consist of two sections of 20-gauge steel forming an "H" section. Approved 1/4 " wire glass to be held in a 3/4" uniform edge bite.

Hardware: Sliding panel shall be furnished with a white bronze operating handle, which is attached to the jamb of the operable sash. A spring activated automatic closing device is used in conjunction with a 165-degree fusible link assembly mounted on the unit. This assembly functions as a self-closing mechanism.

Installation: The installer shall set all window frames in a level, plumb and square condition without distortion. Units shall be promptly anchored, flashed and caulked in accordance with good window installation practice.

Soft-Lite's Top 5 Questions To Ask About Window Design

Soft-Lite, a leading manufacturer of replacement windows, provides a check-list of important questions to ask while choosing a window. The Window Man, as an exclusive Soft-Lite dealer of a window made exclusively for The Window Man--the The Window Man DH-11--we're happy to talk about each of Soft-Lite's top 5 questions with you.

They are:

Top Five Questions to ask about the design features of the window:

1. Tell me what makes your sill design better than the others.
a. All of our double-hung models, for example, feature an engineered sloped sill that offers
more barriers and diversions to air and water infiltration than conventional, lower-performance sills. There is a mechanical structural interlock that supplements the interlock at the meeting rail to hold the lower sash tightly in place, even during high-stress wind loads in excess of 190 miles per hour. A sill rail runs the length of the sill that is straddled by a soft rubber gasket under compression when the window is locked to block air and water from entering. Our sill dam is mortised directly into the jamb to assure no butt-joint leaks common to older sills where sealant is the only barrier. Optional Comfort FoamTM can be used to insulate the inside chambers of the sill for the ultimate in energy efficiency.

2. Tell me about your weatherstripping and compression seals.
a. Our windows feature Triple-Fin weatherstrips that offer two or three times the barriers of
single or double-fin designs. Each fin is compounded with Microban®, a popular anti-microbial
treatment that fights the growth of mold and bacteria on the weatherstripping. Our closed-cell
neoprene compression seals work under the pressure of the locked window much like the
gaskets in refrigerators and freezers, to fight the transfer of energy in and out and to add yet
more barriers and diversions to the penetration of air and water into your home.

3. Does your window have mechanical interlocks and where are they?
a. All of our windows feature mechanical interlocks at the meeting rail between the lock rail and the keeper rail. There is another mechanical structural interlock built into our sill design on some models.

4. How tight are the manufacturing tolerances on your window?
a. With our new Sturtz automated assembly lines, installed in late 2006, our overall
manufacturing tolerances are the best in the business at ± 1/32”.
5. How many options do I have available to me to customize your window?
a. Internal grids, V-groove glass, tempered, laminated, triple pane, different spacer systems, art glass, internal laminates, external colors; consult your The Window Man representative.
