“The Greener Side of Things”:

The Window Man has our environment and the people who live its’ best interest in mind when considering what products we provide to our consumers. With the all of the new information available to us regarding PVC and its effects on the environment and on our health we have taken a closer look at what we are selling and how we are handling the disposal of the materials used and removed in replacing your windows and doors.

As we are all aware products made of PVC including “Vinyl Windows” pose great risks to our health and our environment. However, a “non-plastic nation” is virtually impossible. But we can limit the use of this material. The Window Man offers only products that are made to last so that they do not have to be replaced again. The truth of the matter is that vinyl windows are the most economical way of conserving the use of fossil fuels and saving energy. With a vinyl window that is engineered to have the least amount of air infiltration and a “life of home” life cycle can create positive reasoning for using vinyl windows in your home. We also educate consumers on ways to save there existing wood windows and make them more efficient without replacing them therefore reducing both the manufacturing of vinyl windows and disposing of your existing windows while making your home energy efficient and comfortable at the same time. We do understand that this option is not always the best option for the homeowner or that the existing window is not salvageable. In these cases we offer a variety of materials for your windows such as fiberglass, wood, aluminum, steel and the best engineered vinyl windows available in the market today. This allows us to offer a solution that best fits your needs while doing our part to protect our environment and you.

As part of this fight we have added our sister company “The Solar Energy Co.” to our arsenal of products that help us save energy. The Solar Energy Co. offers solar energy systems for both thermal (hot water) and photovoltaic (electric) ways to use our greatest source of energy the “SUN”.

Our goal is to do our part to protect our planet and our quality of life and the quality of life of our future--our children.

Please join us in this fight, ask us how to save your old windows and make your home energy efficient at the same time.

DeVac 600 Series Dual Frame Thermo-Barrier

The Window Man is pleased to offer representatives available for Commercial and Architectural appointments. Contact us, or stop by one of our three Northern Virginia Showrooms for more information.

One of our line of commercial windows, the DEVAC 600 series, is of particular interest.

The DEVAC 600 Series high performance dual frame Thermo-Barrier aluminum windows have a wide airspace between interior and exterior glass panes to conserve energy and reduce outside noise penetration. The unique, non-structural DEVAC Thermo-Barrier provides the key to effective performance by meeting essential design criteria:

  • Insulates interior frame and sash from costly thermal transfer and improves condensation resistance.
  • Effectively seals against air and water leakage through barrier into wall structures.
  • Allows freedom of expansion and contraction while keeping structural integrity between interlocking parts.
  • Interlocks aluminum frame members so that forces generated by thermal movement and structural load will utilize the barrier material for it's greater compressive strength. A design principle proven by 30 years of service with no failure.
  • Custom sized to 1/32 of an inch. Available as double-hung, horizontal slider, removable panel and fixed panel. Historical designs and special shapes are offered.

Comfort Line Fiberglass Windows

The Window Man is proud to carry Comfort Line fiberglass windows at our three Northern Virginia showrooms.

Comfort Line has manufactured and supplied windows and patio doors for the building products industry since 1959. In 1964 Comfort Line pioneered the use of vinyl for storm windows and storm door fabrication. Pultrusions technology revolutionized the window industry again in 1988.

This window system provides the best of both worlds: a frame and sash constructed of pultrusions fiberglass with real oak veneer applied to the interior.

Our fiberglass windows are indestructible by the elements. With beauty and comfort in mind, we have taken fiberglass of superior strength and designed a window system that offers a lifetime of maintenance free operation.

Comfort Line continues it strong tradition of excellence in design as well as in product innovation, adding new concepts to windows and doors in the fiberglass and vinyl fenestration products.

Heat Mirror

Northern Virginia's The Window man is proud to carry the Heat Mirror™ family of products.

The choice of the right glazing is one of the most important and far-reaching decisions that an architect or building owner will make. This decision impacts the overall design, human comfort, energy efficiency, mechanical HVAC design and loads, daylighting, condensation control, ultraviolet fading and sound control. In the design of any building (whether it be residential, commercial or industrial) one must look at and take into consideration the six principal glazing design challenges.

These are:

  • Winter Comfort and Heating Load
  • Summer Comfort Cooling Load
  • Natural Daylighting
  • Appearance and Reflectivity
  • Ultraviolet Fading Control
  • Condensation Control

The Heat Mirror™ family of wavelength-selective products offer the solution to all glazing design challenges such as climate, elevation and application. These solutions provide unparalleled flexibility to "tune" a building to meet these needs. As more and more architects, builders and homeowners adopt Southwall's technology buildings will move from part of the environmental problem to part of its solution.

HEAT MIRROR™ INSULATING GLASS

Heat Mirror™ is a low-emissivity coated film product suspended inside an insulating glass unit. The result is a triple unit with two airspace's without the weight of triple insulating glass and with far superior insulating and shading performance. The Window Man offers two types of Heat Mirror™, they are: HM 88 and HM 66. These range from the low reflectance, high-light transmittance performance of Heat Mirror 88 through the shading performance of Heat Mirror 66.

All Heat Mirror products can be used with virtually any type of glass - clear, heat absorbing, reflective, heat-strengthened, tempered, laminated - to achieve superior performance in a wide range of aesthetics.

HEAT MIRROR™ PLUS INSULATING GLASS

Heat Mirror Plus™ substitutes one lite of low-emissivity coated glass for the uncoated glass used in the Heat Mirror unit. With an optional Argon or Krypton filling, a U-Value of less than .12 (R-value of 8.33) can be achieved. This product meets the criteria for institutional projects or projects requiring high insulation values and is available in custom sizes and shapes.

SUPERGLASS SYSTEM™

Introduced in 1990, the Superglass System® has become the most energy-efficient glazing product on the market to be offered in a l" overall thickness. A U-value of .11 (R-Value of 9.09) is achieved by using two HM 88 films suspended inside two 1/8" pieces of glass. This insulating glass unit is filled with krypton gas and features a patented tape system for gas retention.

Superglass further offers a thermally broken, insolating spacer to stop conduction through the edge of the glass. This achieves a lower U-value for the entire unit, thus a higher R-Value. (Exact U-values are dependent upon the framing system used.)

Units are available in custom sizes for projects requiring high insulation, but limited in the overall thickness of glass such as operable windows.

IMPROVED SOLAR HEAT CONTROL

1. Exterior Radiated heat is reflected
2. Direct heat coming in is reduced
3.Interior Radiated Heat is reflected

Heat Mirror insulating glass is available with a variety of clear coatings for mastering the sun's heat. From Heat Mirror 66 to Heat Mirror 88, solar heat gain is properly controlled, and offers you energy efficiency with relation to HVAC costs.

IMPROVED COMFORT

Even when outside temperatures are very low, Heat Mirror keeps the interior glass temperature close to the room temperature, reducing drafts and chilly spots near windows.

MINIMAL CONDENSATION

Heat Mirror resists wintertime condensation at exterior temperatures up to 45 degrees colder than conventional insulating glass, a particularly important benefit for pool and spa enclosures, computer rooms, and other high-humidity environments.

REDUCED FABRIC FADING

Heat Mirror insulating glass blocks 99.5% of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation, helping reduce damage to valuable furnishings and merchandise from fading and deterioration. Laboratory studies indicate that fabrics behind clear Heat Mirror glazing resist fading and retain their original color up to three times longer than fabrics behind clear single pane glass.

NOISE CONTROL

In noisy environments, Heat Mirror's unique construction insulates against unwanted sound transmission better than ordinary double-pane windows. Heat Mirror can be used with laminated glass on the inboard and/or outboard light for maximum noise control.

How Do I Choose An Energy Efficient Window

Here at The Window Man we get a lot of questions about choosing energy efficient windows. How can you tell which windows are a good bet?

Look for products that are tested and approved by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). This includes testing the U-value of a window. Look for the sticker on the window. Another place to look for information on energy efficiency in windows is: U.S. EPA Energy Star Homes Program web site. NFRC and Energy Star give you a measure of a windows "Thermal Performance Only".

• 1-A. How Should I evaluate structural, air infiltration and other performance issues?

AMA and NWWDA Ratings

American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA)*
National Wood Window and Door Association (NWWDA)*

* Have set test specifications standards for windows and doors

How the Standard Works

The standard defines four mandatory performance requirements for a completely fabricated window:

• Structural integrity to withstand wind loads

• Resistance to Water Leakage

• Resistance to air infiltration

• Forced Entry resistance

Actual windows are tested by independent labs and graded by their "Design Pressure" performance.

The following table shows the minimum Performance Grade required for each class.

Window/Door Performance Grade Structural Test Pressure Water Resistance Pressure
Residential (R) 15 22.5 psf 2.86 psf
Light Commercial (LC) 25 37.5 psf 3.75 psf
Commercial (C) 30 45 psf 4.5 psf
Heavy Commercial (HC) 40 60 psf 6.00 psf
Architectural (AW) 40 60 psf 8.00 psf

A window rated "R" 15 just passed for residential use only.
An "R" 30 or 45 rated window will perform much better.
