Here at The Window Man we're pleased to carry Optimum's Series SC7650 fire-rated double and single hung steel windows.
These steel double and single hung windows have been proven to withstand temperatures in excess of 1650 degrees (900 degrees C) in laboratory tests. Even after 45 minutes of fire exposure all individual muntins, mullions, jamb members and sash components remained in position. Each window features two fusible link components made of slow melting alloy. When exposed to temperatures of 165 degrees or more, the links melt and automatically seal the window shut, which prevents the spread of smoke and fire to adjacent buildings.
Stop by any of our three Northern Virginia showrooms to see if the Series SC7650 windows are right for your renovation or new construction project.

Bronze and Stainless Steel Custom Windows
Northern Virginia's The Window Man is proud to carry Optimum Windows in all three of our area showrooms. Optimum is the only window company to offer galvanized, pre-painted, and cold rolled formed steel window and door products in the US.
Optimum's specialty metal line of windows are designed to meet the growing needs of architects and designers who wish to use a more elegant and exotic material for both private residences and commercial buildings. Optimum's bronze and stainless steel windows and doors have been placed in luxury homes where they have been chosen not only for their distinctive beauty but also their extreme durability.
Optimum's use of bronze alloy OT67 is especially desirable in areas where its almost unlimited life can weather the elements such as salt air, high winds and rain. Because both bronze and stainless steel add a distinctive look to architectural facades, their use is limited only by the creativity of architects designers and planners who develop unique commercial and residential projects. The technical staff at Optimum can assist construction industry professionals in maximizing the beauty and utility of these unusual precious metals in their designs.
Bronze windows and doors come in a natural finish with patina which could be polished, if desired. The stainless steel windows and doors are available in either a brushed or mirror finish.

The Window Man's Mon-Ray Classic Series Storm Doors are the end result of over forty years of research, design and production. Pound for pound, no other storm door can compare to its overall strength, energy-efficiency and attractive, trim-line appeareance.

Evaluating Energy Performance
Everyone is interested in conserving energy nowadays. Not only is energy conservation a cornerstone of environmentally-friendly building practices, but it also helps reduce your monthly utility bills—always welcome in today’s tough financial climate. But how do you evaluate a window’s energy performance? Look for products that have been tested and approved by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Another place to look for information on energy efficient windows is the U.S. EPA Energy Star Homes Program web site. NFRC and Energy Star give you a measure of a window’s Thermal Performance… But if you want to evaluate a window or door’s structural, air infiltration and other performance issues, check for its AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturers Association) and NWWDA (National Wood Window and Door Association) Ratings.
These rating systems define four mandatory performance requirements for a completely fabricated window:
• Structural integrity to withstand wind loads
• Resistance to Water Leakage
• Resistance to air infiltration
• Forced Entry resistance
For more information about which energy efficient door or window is right for your new construction or renovation in Northern Virginia, stop by one of The Window Man's three area locations. All of The Window Man consultants are happy to help you choose the perfect product for your project.

Devac 400 Series
The Window Man is proud to carry Devac 400 Series windows at its three Northern Virginia locations. The DeVAC 400 Series offers high performance single frame aluminum windows for moderate temperature zones. Its resistance to air and water penetration (as well as structural characteristics) make the 400 series similar to the 600 series. The 400 Series is a popular choice for the Southern United States.
You can improved the Devac 400 series thermal performance by glazing the vertical or horizontal sliding windows with 1/2" sealed insulating glass. Fixed models can accept 1-1/4" insulated glass or panels. The series can be coupled with interior and exterior trims used in the DeVAC "no tear-out" replacement systems.
Secondary Glazing Applications
The DeVAC 400 Series is also ideal as a "secondary" window when added to the interior or exterior of an existing single-glazed window system. This provides a cost-effective solution to energy savings at a fraction of the cost of replacing windows. In addition, this secondary glazing system is a proven method to reduce outside noise penetration.
Air Infiltration................under .15 CFM/FT crack @ 25 MPH
Water Resistance................No leakage at 8.0 PSF (56 MPH)
Structural Load.................Resists 60 PSF (150 MPH)

Composite windows combine different strengths together, come in a wide variety of colors, have very low maintenance requirements and are quite durable. To see whether or not composite windows are right for your new construction or renovation project, stop by one of our showrooms to speak to a consultant today. If composite windows aren't the right fit, The Window Man consultants can guide you to aluminum, steel, fiberglass, vinyl, clad wood, or wood.

Condensation & Windows
If you have trouble with window condensation it is probably because you live in a "thermally tight" modern home which you can heat for a fraction of the cost it took to heat the house your parents lived in… Condensation problems may also arise from several common household appliances.
What is Condensation?
Condensation occurs anytime moist warm air comes into contact with a cold surface. For example, the beads of water that drip down the outside of a cold glass of iced tea in the summertime are a product of condensation.
The Cause is Excess Humidity
Condensation may be freeze in the insulation in your attic where it can then melt when the warm weather comes and damage your plaster exactly like a roof leak. Or it may be force its way out through the siding to form blisters under your paint exterior. (That means the most expensive kind of paint job.)
Humidity, water vapor, moisture, steam: they're all water in the form of invisible gas in the air. And they can be present in varying quantities.
Only Part of the Story
A score or more of entirely different conditions may affect the way condensation appears in different homes.
Conditions that may affect condensation problems include:
- Your home’s size
- Ventilation
- The heating system: hot air or water; perimeter or interior wall heating
- The type of insulation and vapor barrier
- Even the type of soil and quality of drainage
For more information on how to combat condensation problems, stop by one of The Window Man's three area showrooms to speak to one of our representatives.

What is a fiberglass composite product?
Pultrusion is the process used to produce continuous lengths of strong, fiberglass composite products having a constant cross section. Products manufactured using this technology include window framing material , rods, structural shapes, beams, channels, pipe, tubing etc.
The manufacturing process works as follows: Continuous strands of fiberglass rovings and fiberglass mats are impregnated with resin, then drawn through a steel die which sets the shape of the stock. A portion of the die is heated to initiate the cure. The end product is a Thermoset Fiberglass Composite. Very high strengths are possible due to high glass concentration and orientation of fiberglass rovings and mats parallel and perpendicular to the length of the material being drawn through the die.
Thermoset - Heat is generally used to cause a chemical reaction which sets the shape of the part permanently. Once the materials are cured they cannot be reformed: the process is irreversible.

Controlling Condensation & Humidity
Many homeowners who visit The Window Man worry about excess humidity and even condensation--particular problems in the DC metro area. Excess humidity can damage wallpaper and furnishings and even increase the risk of unhealthy molds developing in your home’s interior. Take the following simple steps to decrease the humidity in your home.
1. The first step to controlling condensation and humidity is to replace your old windows with newer windows that have insulated glass.
2. Next, make sure that the louvers in your attic or basement crawlspaces are open and that they are large enough to provide proper circulation.
3. Third, run any ventilating fans that you have in your home for much longer than you usually do. (Kitchen fans in particular should run for longer than you think!)
4. Fourth, turn off the furnace humidifier and or any other humidifier you have in your home. (This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people overlook this simple step.)
5. Fifth, make sure your fireplace damper is open so moisture can easily escape.
6. Sixth, consider buying a dehumidifier. If you don't have a dehumidifier and don’t wat to purchase one, try to air out the home for a few minutes every day if feasible.
If you'd like to talk to a representative from The Window Man about which windows and doors are best for moisture and condensation-prone homes, stop by one of our three Northern Virginia showrooms today.

Low-E Glass & Energy Efficiency Windows
Low-E glass is glass with a special insulated glazing, usually on the interior face of the glass, that helps stop heat loss from your home. Many of these energy efficient windows are actually double-glazed windows with a high-transmission, low-E glass and argon gas fill. (Argon is an inert, non-toxic gas used to reduce heat transfer.)

H-Windows: The Best Window For Your New Construction Or Renovation
At The Window Man we carry several window lines, including H Windows, Certainteed, Comfort Line, DeVac, Mon Ray, Optimum, Precision, Softlite, and Sugar Creek.
Here's why H-Windows are one of our favorites:
- The extruded aluminum exterior is maintenance free, comes in four anodized finishes and is much structurally stronger than cladding
- It has a wood interior that provides excellent thermal performance, offers a warm look, and comes in unfinished primed white or factory finished depending on your needs.
- The insulated glass has low e squared film and is argon-filled to add thermal performance. (The film also blocks 75% of ultraviolet rays!) H-Windows insulated glass also comes with warm edge Intercept spacer technology.
It has a Spilka Window Hinge with a 10 year guarantee. Because the weight is carried at the center balance point the window fully reverses so you can wash without disturbing window treatments.
The push bar operating hardware allows for one motion operation that has multiple venting positions and allows the window to have the highest security rating against forced entry.
For more reasons why we're fan of H-Windows here at The Window Man stop by one of our three Northern Virginia showrooms!

Steel Windows?
As you search for the perfect window for your commercial or residential property you're going to run across a variety of different window materials. You may wonder which material is best for you.
Popular window materials include vinyl, clad wood, wood, composites, aluminum, steel, and fiberglass. There are pros and cons associated with each.
Take steel, for example: steel is strong, has narrow side lines, has a wide variety of colors to choose form and is quite durable. On the other hand, steel feels cold, has a commercial look and is expensive.
To find out which window material is perfect for your new or replacement windows, please stop by one of The Window Man's three area showrooms.

Window & Door Terms
As you investigate new or replacement windows for your commercial or residential property you may run into terms you don't understand. For example: rough opening. A rough opening is the opening in the wall that the window or door fits into. Usually the rough opening needs to be 1/2 inch larger (in both width and height) than the frame.
To learn more about replacement and new windows, stop by one of The Window Man's three area showrooms or call 703-978-1012 to speak to a representative.

Fiberglass Windows
Fiberglass windows are a great choice for most homeowners in the Metro DC area. Why? Fiberglass windows are very strong because they have a low expansion rate. The surface is entirely paintable so that it can easily blend in with your home's exterior design. Fiberglass has a good thermal performance--which makes it an ideal window material for eco-conscious homeowners. And it requires little to no maintenance. All of which makes fiberglass a fantastic choice despite the high price tag.

How Can The Stimulus Bill Help Your Home Renovation?
The huge stimulus bill has a great tax credit for replacing windows and doors--30% or up to $1500 if you purchase windows and or doors that have a "U" factor of .30 or below and SHGC of .30 or better. The Window Man has many windows and doors that meet these requirements and some that don't without going to triple pane, which adds a lot to the price. But beware of those that only meet energy star rating because they will not qualify for the tax credit.
So spend $5000 and get $1500 back on your taxes and then save energy year after year!

“The Greener Side of Things”:
The Window Man has our environment and the people who live its’ best interest in mind when considering what products we provide to our consumers. With the all of the new information available to us regarding PVC and its effects on the environment and on our health we have taken a closer look at what we are selling and how we are handling the disposal of the materials used and removed in replacing your windows and doors.
As we are all aware products made of PVC including “Vinyl Windows” pose great risks to our health and our environment. However, a “non-plastic nation” is virtually impossible. But we can limit the use of this material. The Window Man offers only products that are made to last so that they do not have to be replaced again. The truth of the matter is that vinyl windows are the most economical way of conserving the use of fossil fuels and saving energy. With a vinyl window that is engineered to have the least amount of air infiltration and a “life of home” life cycle can create positive reasoning for using vinyl windows in your home. We also educate consumers on ways to save there existing wood windows and make them more efficient without replacing them therefore reducing both the manufacturing of vinyl windows and disposing of your existing windows while making your home energy efficient and comfortable at the same time. We do understand that this option is not always the best option for the homeowner or that the existing window is not salvageable. In these cases we offer a variety of materials for your windows such as fiberglass, wood, aluminum, steel and the best engineered vinyl windows available in the market today. This allows us to offer a solution that best fits your needs while doing our part to protect our environment and you.
As part of this fight we have added our sister company “The Solar Energy Co.” to our arsenal of products that help us save energy. The Solar Energy Co. offers solar energy systems for both thermal (hot water) and photovoltaic (electric) ways to use our greatest source of energy the “SUN”.
Our goal is to do our part to protect our planet and our quality of life and the quality of life of our future--our children.
Please join us in this fight, ask us how to save your old windows and make your home energy efficient at the same time.

DeVac 600 Series Dual Frame Thermo-Barrier
The Window Man is pleased to offer representatives available for Commercial and Architectural appointments. Contact us, or stop by one of our three Northern Virginia Showrooms for more information.
One of our line of commercial windows, the DEVAC 600 series, is of particular interest.
The DEVAC 600 Series high performance dual frame Thermo-Barrier aluminum windows have a wide airspace between interior and exterior glass panes to conserve energy and reduce outside noise penetration. The unique, non-structural DEVAC Thermo-Barrier provides the key to effective performance by meeting essential design criteria:
- Insulates interior frame and sash from costly thermal transfer and improves condensation resistance.
- Effectively seals against air and water leakage through barrier into wall structures.
- Allows freedom of expansion and contraction while keeping structural integrity between interlocking parts.
- Interlocks aluminum frame members so that forces generated by thermal movement and structural load will utilize the barrier material for it's greater compressive strength. A design principle proven by 30 years of service with no failure.
- Custom sized to 1/32 of an inch. Available as double-hung, horizontal slider, removable panel and fixed panel. Historical designs and special shapes are offered.

Comfort Line Fiberglass Windows
The Window Man is proud to carry Comfort Line fiberglass windows at our three Northern Virginia showrooms.
Comfort Line has manufactured and supplied windows and patio doors for the building products industry since 1959. In 1964 Comfort Line pioneered the use of vinyl for storm windows and storm door fabrication. Pultrusions technology revolutionized the window industry again in 1988.
This window system provides the best of both worlds: a frame and sash constructed of pultrusions fiberglass with real oak veneer applied to the interior.
Our fiberglass windows are indestructible by the elements. With beauty and comfort in mind, we have taken fiberglass of superior strength and designed a window system that offers a lifetime of maintenance free operation.
Comfort Line continues it strong tradition of excellence in design as well as in product innovation, adding new concepts to windows and doors in the fiberglass and vinyl fenestration products.

Heat Mirror
Northern Virginia's The Window man is proud to carry the Heat Mirror™ family of products. The choice of the right glazing is one of the most important and far-reaching decisions that an architect or building owner will make. This decision impacts the overall design, human comfort, energy efficiency, mechanical HVAC design and loads, daylighting, condensation control, ultraviolet fading and sound control. In the design of any building (whether it be residential, commercial or industrial) one must look at and take into consideration the six principal glazing design challenges. These are:
The Heat Mirror™ family of wavelength-selective products offer the solution to all glazing design challenges such as climate, elevation and application. These solutions provide unparalleled flexibility to "tune" a building to meet these needs. As more and more architects, builders and homeowners adopt Southwall's technology buildings will move from part of the environmental problem to part of its solution. HEAT MIRROR™ INSULATING GLASS Heat Mirror™ is a low-emissivity coated film product suspended inside an insulating glass unit. The result is a triple unit with two airspace's without the weight of triple insulating glass and with far superior insulating and shading performance. The Window Man offers two types of Heat Mirror™, they are: HM 88 and HM 66. These range from the low reflectance, high-light transmittance performance of Heat Mirror 88 through the shading performance of Heat Mirror 66. All Heat Mirror products can be used with virtually any type of glass - clear, heat absorbing, reflective, heat-strengthened, tempered, laminated - to achieve superior performance in a wide range of aesthetics. HEAT MIRROR™ PLUS INSULATING GLASS Heat Mirror Plus™ substitutes one lite of low-emissivity coated glass for the uncoated glass used in the Heat Mirror unit. With an optional Argon or Krypton filling, a U-Value of less than .12 (R-value of 8.33) can be achieved. This product meets the criteria for institutional projects or projects requiring high insulation values and is available in custom sizes and shapes. SUPERGLASS SYSTEM™ Introduced in 1990, the Superglass System® has become the most energy-efficient glazing product on the market to be offered in a l" overall thickness. A U-value of .11 (R-Value of 9.09) is achieved by using two HM 88 films suspended inside two 1/8" pieces of glass. This insulating glass unit is filled with krypton gas and features a patented tape system for gas retention. Superglass further offers a thermally broken, insolating spacer to stop conduction through the edge of the glass. This achieves a lower U-value for the entire unit, thus a higher R-Value. (Exact U-values are dependent upon the framing system used.) Units are available in custom sizes for projects requiring high insulation, but limited in the overall thickness of glass such as operable windows. IMPROVED SOLAR HEAT CONTROL 1. Exterior Radiated heat is reflected Heat Mirror insulating glass is available with a variety of clear coatings for mastering the sun's heat. From Heat Mirror 66 to Heat Mirror 88, solar heat gain is properly controlled, and offers you energy efficiency with relation to HVAC costs. IMPROVED COMFORT Even when outside temperatures are very low, Heat Mirror keeps the interior glass temperature close to the room temperature, reducing drafts and chilly spots near windows. MINIMAL CONDENSATION Heat Mirror resists wintertime condensation at exterior temperatures up to 45 degrees colder than conventional insulating glass, a particularly important benefit for pool and spa enclosures, computer rooms, and other high-humidity environments. REDUCED FABRIC FADING Heat Mirror insulating glass blocks 99.5% of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation, helping reduce damage to valuable furnishings and merchandise from fading and deterioration. Laboratory studies indicate that fabrics behind clear Heat Mirror glazing resist fading and retain their original color up to three times longer than fabrics behind clear single pane glass. NOISE CONTROL In noisy environments, Heat Mirror's unique construction insulates against unwanted sound transmission better than ordinary double-pane windows. Heat Mirror can be used with laminated glass on the inboard and/or outboard light for maximum noise control. For more information, stop by one of our three Northern Virginia showrooms today. |

How Do I Choose An Energy Efficient Window
Here at The Window Man we get a lot of questions about choosing energy efficient windows. How can you tell which windows are a good bet?
Look for products that are tested and approved by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). This includes testing the U-value of a window. Look for the sticker on the window. Another place to look for information on energy efficiency in windows is: U.S. EPA Energy Star Homes Program web site. NFRC and Energy Star give you a measure of a windows "Thermal Performance Only".
• 1-A. How Should I evaluate structural, air infiltration and other performance issues?
AMA and NWWDA Ratings
American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA)*
National Wood Window and Door Association (NWWDA)*
* Have set test specifications standards for windows and doorsHow the Standard Works
The standard defines four mandatory performance requirements for a completely fabricated window:
• Structural integrity to withstand wind loads
• Resistance to Water Leakage
• Resistance to air infiltration
• Forced Entry resistance
Actual windows are tested by independent labs and graded by their "Design Pressure" performance.
The following table shows the minimum Performance Grade required for each class.
Window/Door Performance Grade Structural Test Pressure Water Resistance Pressure Residential (R) 15 22.5 psf 2.86 psf Light Commercial (LC) 25 37.5 psf 3.75 psf Commercial (C) 30 45 psf 4.5 psf Heavy Commercial (HC) 40 60 psf 6.00 psf Architectural (AW) 40 60 psf 8.00 psf A window rated "R" 15 just passed for residential use only.
An "R" 30 or 45 rated window will perform much better.

U and R Values Explained
Customers at The Window Man's three Northern Virginia locations are often confused about (U) and (R) values and how they rate a window's insulation capabilities.
One way that insulation is created is with dead-air space between panes of glass. Therefore a double-paned window gives more insulation than a single-paned one. Other factors contribute to the insulation qualities of a window, such as the gasket, the material type, and the gas used in a gas-filled window. The U/R value tells how the product insulates. It is a formula derived from the efficiency of the product, and that formula takes into account many of the factors just mentioned. A good R measurement is a high one, while a good U measurement is low since U is the reciprocal of the R. Homeowners are more interested in the R value, while builders are interested in the U value.
