Injection foam-filling is generally the most energy efficient, since it completely fills the frame cavities when properly installed. Manually installed, ridged foam pieces are better than nothing, so choose to have those installed when staying within budget is critical. Optimum's Self-Closing Sliding Steel Windows.

The Window Man is proud to carry Optimum;s 7600 Series self-closing steel windows. These fire rated sliding steel windows feature a self-closing mechanism that automatically closes the window in the event of fire. This sliding steel window incorporates the same type of fusible link utilized in Optimum's other fire rated products.

SC7600 Series Specifications

The Steel horizontal sliding window shall be Series SC7600 as manufactured by Optimum Steel Window Corporation. All windows carry either an MEA or Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) fire resistance rating of 45 minutes in accordance with the fire standards for Fire Tests of Window Assemblies, ANSI/UL9 (NFPA 257, ASTM E163).

Materials: All principal cold rolled formed members shall be ASTM A528 low carbon steel. Frame members shall have a minimum thickness of 20 gauge.

Weatherstripping: Sliding sash panel shall have EPDM gaskets throughout entire perimeter (unless otherwise noted).

Finish: All units shall be reasonably free from scratches and blemishes having the following:

- Zinc coating (ASTM A525 Z200) on both surfaces, applied by a continuous hot dipped process (the Sendzimir system) followed by a "skin pass" (smoothing) procedure which eliminates roughness.
- Primer consisting of a thermosetting epoxy-ureic paint, applied at a thickness of 5 microns on both surfaces.
- Baked polyester powder coating, (baked at 180-200Â° C for 18 to 20 minutes) with an average thickness of 80 microns.

Glazing: Windows shall be factory glazed with obscure or clear 1/4" wire glass. Lites shall have a minimum of 24 gauge wire and a maximum mesh size of one square inch, as per Underwriters Laboratories requirements. Individual lites of glass shall not exceed a day lite dimension of 895 square inches each. Glass shall comply with ANSI Z97.1 and ASTM C1036.

Construction: Frame to be formed of 20 gauge steel sections, with corners which are mechanically assembled and reinforced. Sash members shall be 20 guage formed sections which are coped and assembled. Corner joints shall be fully sealed to prevent leakage. Vent sash shall roll on a 18 gauge track with 1/4" diameter steel ball bearing rollers. Horizontal muntins, when required, shall consist of two sections of 20 gauge steel forming an "H" section. Approved 1/4" wire glass to be held in a 3/4" uniform edge bite.

Hardware: Sliding panel shall be furnished with a white bronze operating handle, which is attached to the jamb of the operable sash. A spring activated automatic closing device is used in conjunction with a 165 degree fusible link assembly mounted on the unit. This assembly functions as a self-closing mechanism.

Installation: The installer shall set all window frames in a level, plumb and square condition without distortion. Units shall be promptly anchored, flashed and caulked in accordance with good window installation practice.

FACT #24: SOLAR TUNING:
Which Low-E Option is Right For You? Choosing the right Low-E for your home is critical to maximizing energy efficiency. Hard coat, soft coat, Low-E squared or Low-E cubed? Many brands only offer one Low-E option, which may be fine for Florida or Minnesota, but in this region "Solar Tuning" to maximize your windows' performance is something you need to consider. Passive-solar heat gain in the winter can be an enormous energy saver, but you will no get that with Low-E cubed, 365, 366, or Solar Bane 70. Ask us about "Solar Tuning" your home.

FACT #32:
Are They Four-Pt. Fusion Welded? Are your windows four-point fusion welded? And if so, are both the frame and sash welded? These should be two of the first questions asked by any vinyl window shopper. Sadly, and surprisingly, many window companies still use outdated, inefficient mechanical windows. With mechanical windows, there is only one question to ask -- not will these windows begin to leak, waste energy and become unreliable, but when will they? Which Material is Right for Your Home? Every home is different. One-story ranch, two-story colonial, brick, vinyl-sided, downtown, historic district? Oops! What codes & ordinances? At The Window Man we are actually aware of all federal, state and local remodeling codes, including the recently-passed EPA Lead-Safe legislation. This new law requires all contractors, remodelers and anyone involved in home renovations to be certified as an EPA Lead-Safe company. Anyone considering replacement windows (especially those in the Historic District) needs to verify that the company you're considering will not only meet, but ultimately surpass required code specifications. After all, you don't want your new windows installed twice, do you? We've installed millions of window over the last 21 years -- you can trust us!

Great Window? Who said so? Has the window you're considering for purchase been tested for energy-efficiency, durability and functionality? Is it maintenance-free and easy to operate? Does it include a strong, easy-to-understand warranty? How does it stand up to solar UV rays, noise and air infiltration? Well, unless your window has been tested and certified by AAMA, the NFRC and is Energy Star compliant, you don't know. Many window companies install windows that have NO certification of ANY kind. Tom Patterson founded P.B.S. Inc, trading as “The Window Man”, in August of 1989 after being a partner in a small building supply company (Contractors Discount Supply) that sold just to builders.

The new construction industry is primarily about “price”. That lead me to the “replacement” window & door market, which is value driven.

We at The Window Man, have always aimed to offer the “best value” in all types of windows & doors; whether vinyl, wood, wood clad, fiberglass, composite, aluminum, or steel.

We became involved in the commercial window industry in the mid nineties when we became the area dealer for Mon-Ray/DeVAC windows. This has allowed us to work with architects, structural engineers, & acoustical engineers on many large and small scale projects.

We have also worked on Federal projects including historical and acoustical.

By incorporating many of the things we have learned in the commercial and Federal construction arena, we can better serve our residential customers as well.
Our industry is a combination of old (low tech) and new (high tech) that is always interesting and challenging as it continues to evolve. We enjoy the challenge of staying on top of the latest technology.

Justice Clarence Thomas recently asked me why windows and doors cost so much. The answer is:

...Windows are some of only a few parts of your home that impact both the inside and outside of it.
...Windows have to look good and look appropriate to your home as they attract the eye from inside and out and they add curb appeal.
...Windows must also perform! Let light inside, allow fresh air in "ventilation" and at the same time be able to stop air infiltration, stop radiant heat loss & gain and reduce fading. All while keeping a slim profile (most window sash are less than 1/4 as thick as walls) and of course they are not allowed to let in any water!

They must do all of this while looking good! We should give them female names--a lot of multitasking while looking good!!

AMMA and NWWDA ratings have set test specifications standards for windows and doors. AAMA stands for American Architectural Manufacturers Association, while NWWDA stands for National Wood Window and Door Association. AMMA and NWWDA standards work by defining four mandatory performance requirements for a completely fabricated window:

Cleaning Vinyl Windows

Confused about how to best clean your vinyl windows. Luckily, vinyl windows, long popular with homeowners because they are long-lasting, and also easy to maintain. These windows can be slid out of their frames and tilt for easy cleaning. Unfortunately, they are prone to scratches and can be easily damaged if you don't use the correct cleaning products. With proper care, however, the average homeowner can clean their vinyl windows safely using regular household cleaning products.

Here's how:

First, unlock the window and raise the bottom sash. Use the tilt latches on either side of the window to tilt the bottom sash towards you until it is flat.

Then mix a small amount of dish soap with water, and use a soft cloth to clean the windows in a circular motion until all dirt and debris has been removed.

That's it! It's easy to enjoy clean, bright windows without harming the glass surface.

Air Leakage

Here at The Window Man we pride ourselves on being the Educational Window Company. We start the educational process by talking about the three Window Evils.

Today we're going to talk about air infiltration, also called or air leakage.

Air leakage is unwanted amounts of outside air entering the house through cracks and small openings. A leaky house allows moisture, dust and allergens into your home, making it unhealthy. As air pressure changes in your home, these same leaks also allow heated or cooled air to escape. These air leaks waste energy dollars! Air infiltration causes cold drafts and temperature differences within a room, which frequently causes the thermostat to be set higher or lower, so that the average temperature is at the desired level. The Window Man takes pride in only selling windows that far exceed industry standards to reduce the air infiltration into your home.

Air leakage may come from gaps and cracks around the windows and doors in your home and can account for 50% of your heating costs. By reducing air infiltration, you can use lower thermostat settings and your comfort level significantly increases.

A good analogy is to think of going outside on a cold, windy day wearing an expensive, good quality winter coat all decked out with thermal fleece and water repellent, but if you don’t zip it up, you get little of the benefits you paid for.

Choose a window that has been tested and AAMA certified for air infiltration. If a manufacturer elects to have its product tested, it cannot have more than 0.3 cfm/ft2 of air leakage per linear foot of crack space.

Vinyl is the most popular material windows are made from, but vinyl moves! Vinyl expands and contracts 10 times more then other window materials and windows are tested at normal room temperatures. Our experience shows that vinyl windows need to be tested at “.10” cfm or less, which is 3 times better than a passing grade so they don’t become drafty in the winter when they shrink.

Optium's SC7650 Series

The Window Man is pleased to carry Optimum's steel vertical sliding windows. Optimum's SC7650 Series carry either an MEA and or Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) label for fire resistance rating of 45 minutes, in accordance with the standards for Fire Tests of Window Assemblies, ANSI/ UL9 (NFPA 257, ASTM El63).

All principal cold rolled formed members are ASTM A528 Low Carbon Steel. Frame members have a minimum thickness of 20 gauge.

Sliding sash panels have EPDM gaskets throughout the entire perimeter (unless otherwise noted).

All units are reasonably free from scratches and blemishes and have the following:

* Zinc Coating (ASTM A525 Z200) on both surfaces, applied by a continuous hot dipped process (The Sendzimir System), followed by a "skin pass" (smoothing) procedure which eliminates roughness.
* Primer consisting of epoxy-ureic paint, applied at a thickness of 5 microns on both surfaces.>
* Baked polyester powder coating, (baked at 180-200 degrees C for 18-20 minutes) with an average thickness of 80 microns.

Windows are factory glazed with obscure or clear 1/4" wire glass. Lites have a minimum of 24 gauge wire with a maximum mesh size of one square inch as per Underwriters Laboratories requirements. Individual lites of glass shall not exceed a daylite dimension of 895 square inches each. Glass complies with ANSI Z97.l and ASTM C1036.

Frame are formed from 20 gauge steel sections, with corners which are mechanically assembled and reinforced. Sash members are 20 gauge formed sections which are coped and assembled. Corner joints are fully scaled to prevent leakage. Horizontal muntins, when required, consist of two sections of 20 gauge forming an "H" Section. Approved 1/4" wire glass are held in 3/4" uniform edge bite.

Lower sliding panel are furnished with standard pull handles and sweep lock at meeting rail. A fusible link assembly is attached directly to the front balancers and functions as the self-closing mechanism.

The Window Man sets all window frames in a level, plumb and square condition without distortion. Units are promptly anchored, flashed and caulked in accordance with good window installation practice.

What Is Low-E?

Low-E, or low emissivity, is how a window reflects certain light length waves. A window with a good low-E lowers your energy bill because in the summer it reflects sunlight and in the winter it absorbs it to help heat your home.

The exceptional strong tubular frame and Z-bar are made of tough T6 aluminum. This additional heat tempering gives the aluminum a special retention memory. The DeVAC 400 Series offers high performance single frame aluminum windows for moderate temperature zones. Its resistance to air and water penetration (as well as structural characteristics) make the 400 series similar to the 600 series. The 400 Series is a popular choice for the Southern United States.

You can improved the Devac 400 series thermal performance by glazing the vertical or horizontal sliding windows with 1/2" sealed insulating glass. What is Condensation?

Condensation occurs anytime moist warm air comes into contact with a cold surface. For example, the beads of water that drip down the outside of a cold glass of iced tea in the summertime are a product of condensation.

The Cause is Excess Humidity

Condensation may be freeze in the insulation in your attic where it can then melt when the warm weather comes and damage your plaster exactly like a roof leak. What is a fiberglass composite product?

Pultrusion is the process used to produce continuous lengths of strong, fiberglass composite products having a constant cross section. Products manufactured using this technology include window framing material , rods, structural shapes, beams, channels, pipe, tubing etc.

The manufacturing process works as follows: Continuous strands of fiberglass rovings and fiberglass mats are impregnated with resin, then drawn through a steel die which sets the shape of the stock. A portion of the die is heated to initiate the cure. The end product is a Thermoset Fiberglass Composite. Very high strengths are possible due to high glass concentration and orientation of fiberglass rovings and mats parallel and perpendicular to the length of the material being drawn through the die.

Thermoset - Heat is generally used to cause a chemical reaction which sets the shape of the part permanently. Once the materials are cured they cannot be reformed: the process is irreversible.

Take the following simple steps to decrease the humidity in your home.

1. The first step to controlling condensation and humidity is to replace your old windows with newer windows that have insulated glass.

2. Next, make sure that the louvers in your attic or basement crawlspaces are open and that they are large enough to provide proper circulation.

3. Third, run any ventilating fans that you have in your home for much longer than you usually do. (Kitchen fans in particular should run for longer than you think!)
